Basic Facts

-Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S.

-The public health cost of suicide each year is $12 billion

-Twice as many people die from suicide every year than from HIV and homicide combined

-Males are 4 times as likely to die by suicide, while females are three times more likely to attempt

-While the elderly have the highest suicide rate for any age group, suicide was the third leading cause of death among college students (1100 students each year)

-College students report thinking about suicide more than any other age group

-Of those students that committed suicide and were seeking treatment, only 18% reported their thoughts of suicide to the treatment provider

- 9.5% of college students consider suicide each year and 1.5% actually attempt

-Advanced students and graduate students are at the highest risk for suicide

-Most suicides by college students occur off campus

-90% of suicides are associated with mental illnesses, such as depression, bipolar disorder and substance use

-50% of suicides are associated with depression

-Two thirds of those that commit suicide are not seeking treatment at the time of their death, half never sought treatment
