Stigma

-Stigma is negative beliefs and attitudes held about people that are mentally ill, most of these beliefs are false and lead to major barrier for people seeking help for mental illness due to feelings of shame.

-Dispelling the myths:

-People with mental illness have the same needs as others

-People with mental illness can recover and can lead productive lives and make valuable contributions to society

-Discriminating against people with mental illness keeps them from seeking help and violates basic human rights, so treat people with mental illness with respect and dignity

-Avoid using derogatory labels, such as calling people crazy

-Mental illness and suicide are not inexplicable; they have causes and can be treated

-There is no single cause that leads to mental illness or suicide; there are usually a number of complex factors that contribute
