Alcohol and Substance Use
- Alcohol and substance use is involved in many suicides, particularly among males
- Lowered inhibitions lead to an increased risk for suicide
- Often those with alcohol and substance use have other risk factors for suicide as well, such as depression, impulsivity and aggression
- Alcohol withdrawal increases the risk of suicide as well, symptoms of withdrawal may include:
  - sweating
  - fast heart rate
  - shaking hands
  - difficulty sleeping
  - nausea/vomiting
  - hallucinations
  - agitation
  - anxiety
  - seizures
- While more alcohol and substances are often involved in suicide among males it is often not the means males choose to commit suicide, females are more likely to use a substance for the purpose of killing themselves
- Less than 1% of drug related suicide attempts result in death if the person makes it to the emergency room
