Group May Be Right For You….!

Depressed? Anxiety or panic problems? Shy? Relationship problems that keep happening over and over again?
If you feel confused about your life and the relationships in it, group can be a powerful, effective and engaging way to get help.  Check this brochure and with your counselor to see if it is right for you.

What Does Research Say About Group Counseling?
Research shows that group is considered to be equally effective as individual counseling. Therapeutically, groups have been found to be highly effective with a wide range of problems, including but not limited to:  relationship problems, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, social phobia and some eating disorders.

But is it right for me?
It is fairly typical that people are a little apprehensive about the idea of group counseling, but, as they progress, they find it extremely helpful. Please discuss any questions or fears you may have about group with your counselor.

How does group work?
Many problems experienced by students are interpersonal in nature. Often they stem from relationships or from patterns of relating to others. Group counseling offers a powerful opportunity to explore and understand how you relate to others and get specific feedback on how others react to you. The lessons group members learn from each other and the chance to work through problems with other people who share similar concerns are what make groups special.

What happens in group?

  • Six to eight people meet face-to-face with one or more trained group counselors.

  • A safe group climate is created among group members.

  • Members talk about their goals.

  • Members then help each other by giving feedback in the form of advice, reactions, and perceptions of how other members are coming across.

  • Members try out new ways of behaving and learn more about the way they are seen and understood by others.

  • Members are then encouraged to try out new ways of relating to others in their lives and then discuss this with the group.

What do I talk about?
You may benefit most if you talk about what brought you to the counseling center in the first place. However, no one will force you to talk about anything you do not want to. You can ask for advice, give advice or offer feedback to others. People also gain a lot from listening to how others work through their problems.

What you should know about format of groups:

  • You are entitled to dignity, respect and equal treatment by all.

  • Every group member commits to helping keep the group safe for others. This means that when you share feelings, it is done so in a way that respects others’ core self, dignity and right to be treated with equality.

  • It is your responsibility to make group work for you.  Bring your goals into the group and allow the group to help you. You do not have to talk or disclose more than you are comfortable with.  However, you will find the group is more useful to you if you challenge yourself to bring what concerns you to the group.

  • The group sessions are confidential. You, other members, and the group leaders are required not to disclose the contents of the group sessions to anyone outside the group.

  • If you are going to miss a session, please let one of the leaders of the group know.

  • Being on time is very important.

  • If you decide that you have gained as much as possible from the group or that it isn't the most appropriate treatment method for you, we ask that you come to the group and say good-bye.

  • The work of the group needs to be done in the group during group time. We ask that you not socialize with members outside of group
